The Gosford High School Band started in the mid 70s with 12 students playing on borrowed instruments. Since then it has grown substantially with over 50 talented young musicians between the ages of 13 and 18. The band also encompasses a Senior Jazz Ensemble of 8 students.
The band performs annually at the Newcastle Jazz festival as well as various community and school functions and competitions. They also undertake a Regional NSW tour in alternate years and in 2005 celebrated their 30th anniversary with a 10 day performance tour to New Zealand.
The band has been privileged to have had two extremely talented and professional musicians as Musical Director. Ed Wilson ( Daly Wilson / Ed Wilson Big Band) held the position until 1996 when he handed over to the current director Warwick Alder - Ten Part Invention, Bernie McCann Quartet, Craig Scott Quintet; Sydney All Stars, Morrison Bros. Big Bad Band. Warwick plays trumpet on Allen Youngblood’s CD “Midnight Odyssey” 3
Forty members of the band are touring to Hong Kong in November 2008 and will be playing at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium on Friday 21st November as part of the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival as well as at other venues and schools.
The students play a lively mix of Jazz, Blues and Concert music that is augmented with a range of wonderful solo improvisation.
